Yesturday i had some spare time to check out the latest Gilles Peterson show on Radio 1.
G broadcasts quite a varied amount of stuff in two hours which is always cool to listen to, ranging from "soul, hip-hop, house, afro, latin, dubstep, jazz and beyond". This week it was another edition of the 'Brownswood Basement' were for the most part the entire playlist is directly broadcast from vinyl. Cuts of the lastest tunes or ranging back like with this week for a small special to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the jazz label giant Blue Note Records. A lot of my favourite jazzers recorded with this label, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, so it was good that at least some records and artists i'd not really heard of before were played.
Two which caught my ear were 'Kenny Dorham - Afrodisia (album "Afro-Cuban")' and 'Dexter Gordon - Soy Califa ( from "A Swingin' Affair")'. For now i'm listening to both these on last.fm (thankyou free full length previews) till i can get hold of copy's but if you like some calypso/latin/afro-carribean based jazz and fusion you'll really love this raw stuff.
